The Kilimanjaro Climb – Machame Route (7 Days), famously known as the “Whiskey” route, is the most popular route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Its appeal lies in its stunning scenery, but the trail is also known for being steep and challenging. While it is demanding, the 7-day itinerary allows for optimal acclimatization compared to shorter options, making it an excellent choice for climbers seeking a higher success rate.

Day 0 (October 07, 2027): Arrival in Tanzania - Transfer from Airport to Moshi
You will be picked up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. You will meet our Kilimanjaro trekking expert for a comprehensive briefing and gear check before resting for the night.

Day 1 (October 08, 2027): Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Elevation: 5,380 ft to 9,350 ft
Distance: 11 km / 7 miles
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
The drive from Moshi to Machame Gate takes about 1 hour. Passing through the village of Machame on the lower mountain slopes, we begin our trek through the dense rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge until reaching Machame Camp.

Day 2 (October 09, 2027): Machame Camp to Shira Cave
Elevation: 9,350 ft to 12,500 ft
Distance: 5 km / 3 miles
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Heath
This is a shorter but steeper day of hiking. Proceed uphill for spectacular viewpoints overlooking the plains, forests, and Kibo peak, as well as Mount Meru. Notice the vegetation transition into high-altitude plants like Senecio kilimanjari and Lobelia deckenii.

Day 3 (October 10, 2027): Shira Cave to Lava Tower down to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 12,500 ft to 15,190 ft down to 13,044 ft
Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
We climb east up a ridge toward the Lava Tower—a striking volcanic rock formation—before descending through the Senecio Forest to Barranco Camp. Spending time at higher altitude before sleeping lower is highly beneficial for acclimatization.

Day 4 (October 11, 2027): Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 13,044 ft to 13,106 ft
Distance: 5 km / 3 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
We begin by descending into a ravine to the base of the Great Barranco Wall, then scale the steep, non-technical cliff. Crossing a series of hills and valleys, we descend into the Karanga Valley followed by a short climb up to Karanga Camp.

Day 5 (October 12, 2027): Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 13,106 ft to 15,331 ft
Distance: 4 km / 2 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Leaving Karanga, we hit the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail and continue to the rocky Barafu Hut section. Here we complete the Southern Circuit, offering views of the summit from multiple angles, rest, and enjoy an early dinner ahead of summit night.

Day 6 (October 13, 2027): Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, Descent to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft, descent to 10,065 ft
Distance: 18 km / 10 miles
Hiking Time: 13-14 hours
Habitat: Arctic
Around midnight, we begin our demanding push to the summit through extreme cold and wind. Reaching Stella Point (18,900 ft) rewards you with a magnificent sunrise over Mawenzi Peak before arriving at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Afterward, we descend directly to Mweka Camp.

Day 7 (October 14, 2027): Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 10,065 ft to 5,380 ft
Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
On our final day, we complete the descent to Mweka Gate to collect summit certificates. A vehicle will meet you at the gate to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi.
