Overview

Ol Doinyo Lengai (2,886 metres/ 9,442 feet) is located some 240 kilometres to the northwest of Arusha town, along the western escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, overlooking Lake Natron on the border with Kenya. Ol Doinyo Lengai, or Mountain of God in Maasai, is the only active volcano in Tanzania. Ol Doinyo Lengai lies in Tanzania, 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) south of Lake Natron and 120 kilometres (75 mi) northwest of Arusha.
The area around Lake Natron is often described as having a desolate and almost lunar landscape beauty. Walks around the lake and to the streams and waterfalls along the nearby escarpment, make for a fantastic adventure off the beaten track.

Tour Plan

Arrival in Tanzania - Transfer from Airport to Arusha
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to Arusha town. You will meet our Mt. Meru trekking expert who will brief you on your upcoming Mount Meru trekking, then rest until the next day morning.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN TANZANIA (NORTHERN REGIONS)
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to Arusha town. You will meet your driver guide who will brief you on your upcoming tour, then rest until the next day morning.

DAY 2: FROM ARUSHA TO LAKE NATRON
After breakfast in Arusha (Hotel), start driving to Engaresero village (4-5 hours). Later on we will visit lake Natron and Ngare Sero waterfalls which is hiking through a shady gorge filed with water to knees high.

Lake Natron is said to be the only breeding area for the endangered Lesser Flamingoes that live in the Great Rift Valley and it is believed to be the world’s most important breeding site for the Lesser Flamingoes, accounting for 75 per cent of the global population.
The soda lake sits on the lowest point of the Great Rift Valley part in East Africa and is quite shallow, less than three metres deep, and varies in width depending on its water level. The temperatures in the lake mud can reach more than 40 degrees Celsius where evaporation causes high alkalinity. It is said the lake’s high alkaline environment is a barrier against predators trying to reach the flamingo nests.

DAY 3: HIKE OL DOINYO LENGAI AND BACK TO ARUSHA
You will wake up around 11pm to prepare for hiking and have a cup of hot tea/coffee. The mountain can be climbed in 6 hours, affording a breathtaking view of the Great Rift Valley and volcanic formations in the Ngorongoro highlands as you get to the summit. After descending you will drive back to the lodge and later start driving back to Arusha hotel.
