The 7-day Lemosho Route is widely recognized as one of the most scenic and rewarding trails on Mount Kilimanjaro. Offering panoramic vistas from multiple viewpoints around the mountain, this newer route combines breathtaking scenery, lower crowd density, and an exceptional summit success rate. It is an ideal choice for moderate hikers looking for optimal acclimatization.

Starting on the western slopes at Londorossi Gate, the route navigates lush rainforests up to the magnificent Shira Plateau during the first two days. It then heads east past the Lava Tower and traverses the Southern Circuit through the Barranco Valley before making the final push to the summit from Barafu Camp.

What to Expect on Your Trek

Your adventure begins with a scenic 4-hour drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. You will experience diverse ecological zones, transitioning from rich tropical rainforests and alpine heather to high-altitude moorland and arctic desert conditions. With gradual elevation gains and ample acclimatization opportunities, the Lemosho Route offers one of the highest success rates for reaching the Roof of Africa.

Detailed 2027 Tour Itinerary

Arrival Day (November 10, 2027): Arrival in Tanzania - Airport Transfer to Moshi
You will be greeted at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Meet with your lead trekking expert for a comprehensive briefing and gear check before resting for the night.

Day 1 (November 11, 2027): Moshi/Arusha to Londorossi Gate to Lemosho Glades to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Elevation: 2,250 m to 2,750 m (7,380 ft to 9,020 ft)
Distance: 18 km | Hiking Time: 3 hours
Drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Park Gate, followed by a short 4WD track drive to Lemosho Glades. Trek through pristine forest trails to arrive at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp.

Day 2 (November 12, 2027): Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira Camp 1
Elevation: 2,750 m to 3,500 m (9,020 ft to 11,485 ft)
Distance: 12 km | Hiking Time: 5 hours | Habitat: Moorland
The trail steepens as you enter the giant heather moorland zone, crossing the scenic Shira Ridge at 3,600 meters before gently descending to Shira Camp 1 located near a stream on the Shira Plateau.

Day 3 (November 13, 2027): Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2
Elevation: 3,500 m to 3,840 m (11,485 ft to 12,600 ft)
Distance: 6 km | Hiking Time: 2 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Enjoy a gentle walk across the plateau to Shira Camp 2, situated on moorland meadows by a fresh stream. Side-trip walks across the plateau offer fantastic views and support vital acclimatization.

Day 4 (November 14, 2027): Shira Camp 2 via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 3,840 m to 4,630 m down to 3,960 m (12,600 ft to 15,190 ft down to 13,000 ft)
Distance: 15 km | Hiking Time: 7 hours | Habitat: Semi-Desert
Hike east up past the highest vegetation toward the massive volcanic rock formation known as Lava Tower (4,630m). After a lunch break, descend through the lower cliffs of the Western Breach to Barranco Camp in the valley below the Great Barranco Wall.

Day 5 (November 15, 2027): Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 3,960 m to 4,600 m (13,000 ft to 15,000 ft)
Distance: 9 km | Hiking Time: 8-9 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Scale the challenging Barranco Wall and continue along the Southern Circuit path through the Karanga Valley. Trek upward to Barafu Hut, perched on an exposed ridge with incredible views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Day 6 (November 16, 2027): Summit Day! Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 4,600 m to 5,895 m down to 3,100 m (15,000 ft to 19,345 ft down to 10,170 ft)
Distance: 5 km ascent / 13 km descent | Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-5 hours descent | Habitat: Arctic
Begin your final ascent around midnight through heavy scree between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers to Stella Point on the crater rim. Continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Afterward, descend back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.

Day 7 (November 17, 2027): Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi
Elevation: 3,100 m to 1,640 m (10,170 ft to 5,400 ft)
Distance: 10 km | Descent Time: 3-4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest
After a celebratory breakfast, enjoy a scenic 3-hour hike back down to Mweka Gate where you will sign the official registry and receive your summit certificates (Green for Stella Point, Gold for Uhuru Peak) before returning to Moshi for a well-deserved hot shower.
