8 DAYS LEMOSHO ROUTE : JOINING GROUP KILIMANJARO TREKKING

Lemosho Route - 8 days | Arrival Day August 1, 2027 | Start - August 2, 2027

Overview of the 8 Days Lemosho Route Group Trek

The 8-day Lemosho Route is widely considered one of the most scenic and rewarding trails on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering breathtaking panoramic vistas from the western slopes of the mountain. As a premium choice for climbers, it balances low initial crowds, pristine wilderness scenery, and an exceptionally high summit success rate. This route is ideal for both beginners and experienced trekkers, as the gradual profile and optimal duration provide superior acclimatization opportunities.
The trek begins on the western side of Kilimanjaro at Londorossi Gate, traversing lush rainforests up onto the magnificent Shira Plateau over the first couple of days. The trail then proceeds east beneath the towering Kibo ice fields toward Lava Tower, before descending down into the dramatic Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit and pushing onward to the summit from Barafu Camp.

Distance: 6 km / 4 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest

We depart Moshi for Londorossi Gate (approx. 4-hour drive) to complete park registration and entry formalities. From there, we drive a short distance further to the Lemosho trailhead and begin our trek through undisturbed rainforest winding upward to our first night's campsite.
Day 2 (August 3, 2027) : Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

Distance: 8 km / 5 miles
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Heath

We emerge from the rainforest canopy into a vast savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock formations draped in lichens. Ascending gentle rolling hills and crossing crisp mountain streams, we cross the Shira Ridge before descending slightly onto the expansive Shira 1 Camp, where we catch our first majestic views of Kibo peak across the plateau.
Day 3 (August 4, 2027) : Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut

Distance: 11 km / 7 miles
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Moorland

We spend the day exploring the high-altitude Shira Plateau—one of the highest plateaus on Earth—hiking eastward across moorland meadows toward Shira 2 Camp. From there, we diverge toward Moir Hut, a tranquil and secluded campsite nestled at the base of Lent Hills. Optional afternoon walks up Lent Hills offer excellent acclimatization benefits.
Day 4 (August 5, 2027) : Moir Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Habitat: Alpine Desert

We climb upward along a rugged ridge heading southeast toward the striking Lava Tower—a 300-foot volcanic rock formation. After lunch at high altitude, we descend through the remarkable Senecio Forest down to Barranco Camp. This "climb high, sleep low" profile is a cornerstone of safe acclimatization.
Day 5 (August 6, 2027) : Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley
Elevation: 13,000 ft (3,960m)
Distance: 5 km / 3 miles

Elevation: 15,091 ft (4,600m)
Distance: 4 km / 2.5 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Arctic Desert

We leave Karanga behind, ascending through the bleak, windswept high alpine desert toward Barafu Camp. Barafu serves as our staging base camp for the midnight summit push, set against dramatic cliffside terrain.
Day 7 (August 8, 2027) : Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak & Descent to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft, descending to 10,065 ft (4,673m to 5,895m, descending to 3,068m)
Distance: 18 km / 11 miles total
Hiking Time: 13-14 hours
Habitat: Arctic to Rain Forest

Rising around midnight under a blanket of stars, we begin our strenuous push toward the summit. This is the most physically and mentally demanding phase of the expedition, battling cold alpine winds as we zigzag upward in the dark. Passing Stella Point (18,900 ft), we are rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi Peak before reaching Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa! After celebrating at the summit, we descend back down past Barafu for a short rest and lunch, continuing onward to Mweka Camp for our final celebratory dinner on the mountain.
Day 8 (August 9, 2027) : Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate & Return to Moshi
Elevation: 10,065 ft to 5,380 ft (3,068m to 1,640m)
