Overview
The Kilimanjaro Climb – Machame Route (6 Days), famously known as the “Whiskey” route, is the most popular choice for climbers. Renowned for its breathtaking scenic beauty, the Machame Route offers a more challenging trek due to its steeper and more dynamic terrain. With its shorter itinerary, it is best suited for adventurous climbers or those with previous high-altitude, hiking, or backpacking experience planning their climb for August 2027.
What to Expect
Your hike will be guided by expert leaders with extensive experience on Kilimanjaro, assisted by a dedicated team of mountaineers to ensure a safe and unforgettable journey.
The route takes you through a variety of stunning landscapes, including lush Afromontane forests, the heath zone with golden helichrysum and purple lobelia plants, as well as alpine deserts and glacial valleys. These diverse environments offer incredible photographic opportunities throughout your trek.

Tour Plan - August 2027 Departures
Arrival Day: (August 25, 2027) - Transfer from Airport to Moshi
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to Moshi town. You will meet our Kilimanjaro trekking expert who will brief you on your upcoming trek, then rest until the next morning.
Day 1: (August 26, 2027) - Machame Gate – Machame Camp
Distance: 11km / 7 miles
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Elevation: 5,380 ft to 9,350 ft
Habitat: Rain Forest
The drive starts from Moshi to Machame Gate by passing through Machame village located on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. After gate registration and permits, we start hiking through the dense rain forest until we reach Machame Camp.
Day 2: (August 27, 2027) - Machame Camp – Shira Cave Camp
Distance: 5km / 3 miles
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Elevation: 9,350 ft to 12,500 ft
Habitat: Heath
This is a short but steeper day. You will wake up, enjoy breakfast, and proceed with your trek uphill. You'll encounter viewpoints showcasing plains, forests below, Kibo peak above, and Mount Meru. As you gain altitude, vegetation changes to feature Kilimanjaro’s famous high-altitude plants like Senecio kilimanjari and Lobelia deckenii.
Day 3: (August 28, 2027) - Shira Cave Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
Distance: 10km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Elevation: 12,500 ft to 15,190 ft down to 13,044 ft
Vegetation: Alpine Desert
Walking on high moorland, the landscape transforms entirely. We traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing underneath the Lava Tower before reaching Barranco Camp. Following the classic mountaineering rule of "walk high, sleep low," this day aids optimal acclimatization.
Day 4: (August 29, 2027) - Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp
Distance: 9km / 5 miles
Hiking Time: 8–10 hours
Elevation: 13,044 ft to 15,331 ft
Vegetation: Alpine Desert
After a good night's rest, we walk to Barafu Camp at 4,640m across desolate scree slopes. It's a tough, steep climb made more challenging by altitude. Upon arrival, we rest and prepare for summit night. Keep hydrated, eat well, and rest early for our midnight departure.
Day 5: (August 30, 2027) - Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Millennium Camp
Distance: 5km / 3 miles (Ascent) & 7km / 4 miles (Descent)
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours & 2–4 hours
Elevation: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft down to 12,434 ft
Vegetation: Arctic to Heath
Starting around midnight, we climb steeply upwards over scree for 4 to 5 hours to reach Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim just as the sun rises over breathtaking glaciers. Another hour brings us to the summit: Uhuru Peak (5,895m)! We then descend via Stella Point back to Barafu Camp for breakfast before dropping down to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.
Day 6: (August 31, 2027) - Millennium Camp – Mweka Gate
Distance: 12km / 7 miles
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Elevation: 12,434 ft to 5,380 ft
Vegetation: Rain Forest
A gentle trek takes us down through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where we complete park formalities and proudly receive our summit certificates! Our transport meets us to return to Moshi for a hot shower and celebratory drinks.
