Overview: 6 Days Machame Route Group Join 2027

The Kilimanjaro Climb – Machame Route (6 Days), also known as the “Whiskey” route, is the most popular choice for climbers. Renowned for its breathtaking scenic beauty, the Machame Route offers a more challenging trek due to its steeper and more difficult terrain. With its shorter itinerary, it’s better suited for more adventurous climbers or those with previous high-altitude, hiking, or backpacking experience.

What to Expect on Your 2027 Climb

Your hike will be guided by expert leaders with extensive experience on Kilimanjaro, assisted by a dedicated team of mountaineers to ensure a safe and unforgettable journey.
The route takes you through a variety of stunning landscapes, including lush Afromontane forests, the heath zone with golden helichrysum (yellow eternal flowers) and purple lobelia plants, as well as alpine forests and glacial valleys. These diverse environments offer incredible photographic opportunities throughout the climb.

However, the 6-day Machame Route is better suited for experienced climbers, as the short duration may not allow for optimal acclimatization. It’s a scenic yet physically demanding trek, ideal for those ready for the challenge.

2027 Tour Plan & Itinerary

Arrival Day: (October 4, 2027) - Transfer from Airport to Moshi
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to Moshi town. You will meet our Kilimanjaro trekking expert who will brief you on your upcoming Kilimanjaro trekking, then rest until the next day morning.

Day 1: (October 5, 2027) - Machame Gate – Machame Camp
Distance: 11km/7miles,
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours,
Elevation: 5,380ft to 9,350ft,
Habitat: Rain Forest.
The drive starts from Moshi to Machame gate by passing through the Machame village which is located on the slope of mountain Kilimanjaro. After gate REGISTRATION and permits we start the hiking through the dense rain forest until we reach Machame camp.

Day 2: (October 6, 2027) - Machame Camp – Shira Cave Camp
Distance: 5km/3miles,
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours,
Elevation: 9,350ft to 12,500ft,
Habitat: Heath.
This is a shortest day but steeper one. Wake up and get breakfast, proceed with your hiking for the second day where you will trek uphill with viewpoints showing plains, forests, Kibo peak, and Mount Meru. Notice changes in vegetation as trees diminish to high-altitude plants like Scenecio kilimanjari and Lobelia deckenii.

Day 3: (October 7, 2027) - Shira Cave Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
Distance: 10km/6miles,
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours,
Elevation: 12,500ft to 15,190ft to 13,044ft,
Vegetation: Alpine Desert.
Walking now on high moorland, the landscape changes the entire character of the trek. We traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing underneath the Lava Tower and reaching camp following the mountaineering code of ‘walk high, sleep low’ to aid acclimatization.

Day 4: (October 8, 2027) - Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp
Distance: 9km/5miles,
Hiking Time: 8-10 hours,
Elevation: 13,044ft to 15,331ft,
Vegetation: Alpine Desert.
After breakfast, we set off to Barafu camp at 4640m across desolate scree slopes. It’s a tough, steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. Rest in the afternoon to prepare for the summit attempt starting late at night.

Day 5: (October 9, 2027) - Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Millennium Camp
Distance: 5km/3miles & 7km/4miles,
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours & 2-4 hours,
Elevation: 15,331ft to 19,341ft to 12,434ft,
Vegetation: Arctic to Heath.
We start around midnight and walk steeply upwards to the summit glaciers. Reach Stella Point (5739m) at sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Begin the descent via Stella Point back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, then down to Millennium Camp.

Day 6: (October 10, 2027) - Millennium Camp – Mweka Gate
Distance: 12km/7miles,
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours,
Elevation: 12,434ft – 5,380ft,
Vegetation: Rain forest.
A gentle trek takes us down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where we complete park formalities and receive our certificates. Return to the hotel in Moshi for a welcome shower and celebration drinks.
