Overview

The Kilimanjaro Climb – Machame Route (6 Days), famously known as the “Whiskey” route, is the most popular choice for climbers scaling Mt. Kilimanjaro. What to Expect

Your hike will be guided by expert leaders with extensive experience on Kilimanjaro, assisted by a dedicated team of mountaineers to ensure a safe and unforgettable journey.
The route takes you through a variety of stunning landscapes, including lush Afromontane forests, the heath zone with golden helichrysum (yellow eternal flowers) and purple lobelia plants, as well as alpine forests and glacial valleys. These diverse environments offer incredible photographic opportunities throughout the climb.

Tour Plan

Arrival Day: (September 4, 2027) - Transfer from Airport to Moshi
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to Moshi town. You will meet our Kilimanjaro trekking expert who will brief you on your upcoming Kilimanjaro trekking, then rest until the next day morning.

Day 1: (September 5, 2027) - Machame Gate – Machame Camp
Distance: 11km/7miles,
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours,
Elevation: 5,380ft to 9,350ft,
Habitat: Rain Forest.
The drive starts from Moshi to Machame gate by passing through the Machame village which is located on the slope of mountain Kilimanjaro. After gate registration and permits we start the hiking through the dense rain forest until we reach Machame camp.

Day 2: (September 6, 2027) - Machame Camp – Shira Cave Camp
Distance: 5km/3miles.
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours.
Elevation: 9,350ft to 12,500ft.
Habitat: Heath.
This is a short day but a steeper one. Wake up, enjoy breakfast, and start your second day of hiking. You will trek several uphill sections with wonderful viewpoints overlooking plains, forests below, Kibo peak above, and Mount Meru. As you gain high altitude, you will notice changes in vegetation as trees give way to high-altitude plants like Dendrosenecio kilimanjari and Lobelia deckenii.

Day 3: (September 7, 2027) - Shira Cave Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
Distance: 10km/6miles.
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours.
Elevation: 12,500ft to 15,190ft to 13,044ft.
Vegetation: Alpine Desert.
Walking now on high moorland, the landscape changes character completely. We traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing underneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach before reaching camp. We follow the essential mountaineering principle of 'walk high, sleep low' to enhance altitude acclimatization.

Day 4: (September 8, 2027) - Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp
Distance: 9km/5miles.
Hiking Time: 8-10 hours.
Elevation: 13,044ft to 15,331ft.
Vegetation: Alpine Desert.
After a good night’s rest and breakfast, we set off on our walk to Barafu Camp. The climb takes us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It’s a tough, steep walk made more challenging by altitude. Upon arrival, we eat, rest, and hydrate for the summit push ahead. We enjoy an early dinner and rest before starting the summit climb between 11 PM and 12 AM.

Day 5: (September 9, 2027) - Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Millennium Camp
Distance: 5km/3miles ascent and 7km/4miles descent.
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours ascent and 2-4 hours descent.
Elevation: 15,331ft to 19,341ft down to 12,434ft.
Vegetation: Arctic to Heath.
We start off at around midnight and walk steeply upwards to the summit glaciers. We climb scree for 4 to 5 hours, gaining incredible height over a short distance. We reach the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) just as the sun rises. Another hour of walking takes us to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). We then descend back via Stella Point to Barafu Camp for breakfast before continuing down to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.

Day 6: (September 10, 2027) - Millennium Camp – Mweka Gate
Distance: 12km/7miles.
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours.
Elevation: 12,434ft – 5,380ft.
Vegetation: Rain forest.
A gentle trek takes us down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where we complete park formalities and receive our official summit certificates. Our vehicles will meet us here to transfer us back to the hotel in Moshi for a celebratory shower and cold drinks. Overnight at your arranged hotel.
