Overview: 8 Days Lemosho Route Joining Group
The 8-day Lemosho Route is widely recognized as one of the most scenic and rewarding trails on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering panoramic vistas from multiple sides of the mountain. Ideal for climbers seeking a balance of lower crowds, breathtaking landscapes, and a high summit success rate, this route is perfect for both beginners and experienced trekkers. The generous duration allows for superior acclimatization.
Starting on the western side of Kilimanjaro at Londorossi Gate, the trek guides you through lush rainforests up to the magnificent Shira Plateau. The trail then proceeds east towards Lava Tower, descending into the Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit before your final summit push from Barafu Camp.

Detailed 8-Day Itinerary (September 2027)
Arrival Day (September 6, 2027) - Airport Transfer to Moshi
You will be greeted at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your lead trekking expert for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing and equipment check before resting for the night.
Day 1 (September 7, 2027): Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
Elevation: 7,742 ft to 9,498 ft
Distance: 6 km / 4 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Depart Moshi for Londorossi Gate for registration formalities before driving to the Lemosho trailhead. Begin hiking through pristine undisturbed forest winding up to the first campsite.
Day 2 (September 8, 2027): Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
Elevation: 9,498 ft to 11,500 ft
Distance: 8 km / 5 miles
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Heath
Leave the rainforest behind into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock. Cross scenic streams to reach the Shira Ridge, descending gently to Shira 1 Camp with your first views of Kibo across the plateau.
Day 3 (September 9, 2027): Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut
Elevation: 11,500 ft to 13,800 ft
Distance: 11 km / 7 miles
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Explore the magnificent Shira Plateau on a gentle eastward walk toward Shira 2 Camp, then divert to Moir Hut near the base of Lent Hills. Optional walks on Lent Hills provide exceptional acclimatization.
Day 4 (September 10, 2027): Moir Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 13,800 ft to 15,200 ft down to 13,000 ft
Distance: 7 km / 4 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Climb a ridge heading southeast toward the striking Lava Tower formation. Afterward, descend through the Senecio Forest to Barranco Camp. This "climb high, sleep low" profile significantly boosts acclimatization.
Day 5 (September 11, 2027): Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley
Elevation: 13,000 ft
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Conquer the famous Great Barranco Wall and continue along the Southern Circuit trail to the picturesque Karanga Camp.
Day 6 (September 12, 2027): Karanga Valley to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 15,091 ft
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Arctic
Ascend from Karanga into the bleak high-altitude desert of Barafu Camp, positioning your team for the midnight summit push.
Day 7 (September 13, 2027): Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak & Descent to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft (descending to 10,065 ft)
Distance: 18 km / 10 miles
Hiking Time: 13-14 hours
Habitat: Arctic
Begin your mental and physical summit attempt around midnight under the stars. Pass Stella Point to witness a breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi Peak before reaching Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. Descend back down to Mweka Camp for a celebratory final dinner.
Day 8 (September 14, 2027): Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 10,065 ft to 5,380 ft
Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Complete your descent to Mweka Gate to receive your official summit certificates. Meet your transport vehicle for the return drive to your hotel in Moshi.
